The Coalition of Civil Societies and Media Executives for Good Governance in Nigeria (COCMEGG), an umbrella body of over 150 civil society groups, NGOs, Activists and Media Executives that have advocated for transparency, accountability and good governance regime in Nigeria, recently bestowed on the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, with ‘‘The Most Outstanding Commandant-General of the Decade’’ award for his bold initiative of the Agro-Rangers Scheme, infrastructural turnaround of Katsina Institute of Disaster Management, the rebranding and repositioning of the NSCDC and for the transformational management of the organization.

The honour was accorded him after a critical analysis of his performance in repositioning the NSCDC since he took over the mantle of leadership. It is on record, that the NSCDC has witnessed a tremendous turnaround in the transparent management of men and resources, welfare, recruitment, training/re-training, postings and promotions of officers which  has increased the ‘Espirit –de-corps’ and high morale of the rank and file including a motivated work force, which is in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s change agenda resulting  in the current  re-organization, institutional capacity building and human capital development of the Corps that can be compared with International best practices.

Accordingly, the CG’s impressive, selfless, purposeful, committed and excellent leadership to rebuild the Civil Defense Corps especially the Agro-Rangers Initiative that has led to the  reduction in the clashes between herdsmen and farmers. The protection of critical national assets across the country and the physical protection of over 250 cattle ranchers as provided by Federal Government is a laudable initiative and a proactive step towards a lasting peace in the country. That he has always exhibited professionalism, uprightness and operated without sentiments not minding the religious affiliation and background of officers in relation to promotions, postings and discipline.

The Coalition emphasized that  the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, was honoured for his transformational leadership that has brought about discipline, transparent use of fund, accountability and probity in the management of men and resources; having repositioned  and modernized  the Civil Defense Corps for professionalism and effective service delivery through new and innovative policy frameworks and structures  such as intelligence-based security, aggressive fight against vandals, bandits and criminals including the upgrading and expanding of the Civil Defense infrastructures coupled with robust public relations/ security cooperation  with sister security agencies is  indeed worthy of emulation. The security apparatus and paraphernalia has been revamped and re-equipped due to the avowed policy direction, the security of physical national assets has been enhanced while the Civil Defense Corps has become a security organization to be reckoned with in the West African sub-region. Consequently, his selfless campaign and sensitization on disaster management, elections security, re-integration and the protection of physical national infrastructures that includes both domestic and international investments across the country has not gone unnoticed.

The Coalition has identified you as a great patriot with a quest for a total transformation of the NSCDC thereby re-enforcing the public trust reposed on   your office as the Commandant General of NSCDC like never before.

An elated Gana Muhammadu, while responding, thanked the Coalition for the honour bestowed on him, appreciated the present administration for giving him the enabling environment to work and dedicated the award to the NSCDC management team, men and officers that has sacrificed their lives for the good of all. He also said “that without the fatherly and selfless support of the Minister of Interior, Lt. General Abdulrahaman Dambazzau, who initiated the Agro-Rangers Scheme and gave his full endorsement for its take off, it will have been difficult to achieve what we have achieved today’’.

Finally, he thanked Nigerians for the support they have giving to the Corps, without which they will not be here today.
