The U.S. has strongly condemned what it termed “the horrific killing” of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State.
This in contained in a statement by the U.S Department of State through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of African Affairs, on Friday night.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Rev. Dachomo is a Nigerian Reverend Christian pastor, activist of human rights, and preacher in Plateau.
He is best known for his outspoken activism on behalf of Christian communities that have suffered violence in Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt region, and his criticisms of the Nigerian government and security agencies.
The U.S. said perpetrators of the killings “must be held accountable”, addng that “urgent action was needed to strengthen security” and protect people of faith and vulnerable communities in Nigeria.
The statement said continued violence targeting people based on their faith, and other vulnerable populations in the Middle Belt, was deeply alarming.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families and all those affected.
“As discussed last week with Nigerian officials, we must do more to prevent violent acts like those of yesterday,” the statement said.
The U.S. said it remained committed to working with the Nigerian government and partners to combat terrorism and counter violent extremism.
It said this is to “ensure that Christians and all Nigerians can live and practice their faith freely without fear of violence or persecution”.
