Dr Ukana Bassey, an American-based physician and former Member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in Nigeria, joined the African Democratic Congress Party (ADC) on December 27, 2025.
He received his membership card in his ward, with membership number 001, in Ekpene Ikpan, Asang Ward 2, Nsit Ibom LGA.
Having registered at his ward, he proceeded to the party’s State Headquarters at 84, Udotung Uboh Street, Uyo, where he was received by the State Chairman and all 31 Chapter Chairmen, who were in a closed-door meeting but had to put it on hold to receive him.
In his short speech, he promised, among other matters, to ensure adequate healthcare is provided to everyone without requiring deposits before treatment, as several lives have been lost through this process.
A graduate of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) in Nigeria, he later relocated to the United States for further studies and graduated from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences, specialising in internal medicine, treating conditions such as heartburn, immunisations, respiratory issues (acute bronchitis, cough), obesity, and vascular issues (venous embolism and thrombosis). He is a physician with over 25 years’ experience practising in that region.
He is a board-certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), specialising in internal medicine, practising primarily in Texas, and affiliated with hospitals such as Methodist Hospital (San Antonio, TX), Baptist Medical Centre (San Antonio, TX), and The Medical Centre at Bowling Green (Kentucky).
Dr Bassey, who is back in his homestead to sharpen his political tool, was a Member of the State House of Assembly between 1999 and 2003. It is on record that, of all the State Assembly members, he was the only one who never sought a second term.
