In a powerful speech at the Benin Summit Group, Senator Rowland Owie, KSJI, delivered a rallying cry to the sons and daughters of the Great Benin Kingdom on reclamation of values and investment in youth leadership.
Reflecting on the rich history and civilization of Benin, Senator Owie emphasised the need for renewal and collective action to reclaim their values, invest in youth leadership, build infrastructure, and turn culture into an economy.
Harping on a civilisation of enduring legacy, Owie said that the Benin Kingdom, with its over a millennium of uninterrupted history, stood as a testament to the resilience and determination of its people.
From the sophisticated city of moats, walls, and bronzes to the modern-day struggles and triumphs, the Benin Nation has consistently demonstrated its ability to adapt and thrive, he submitted in his remarks as special guest of honour.
Senator Owie paid tribute to the monarchs and notable sons and daughters of Benin who have contributed to the nation’s development and progress.
He also reflected on his own journey, highlighting the importance of service, dedication, and commitment to the Benin Nation.
With a sense of urgency, Senator Owie implored the Benin people to confront the challenges they face and work towards a common goal.
He proposed five imperatives for renewal, to wit:
Reclaim Our Values: Teach Benin history, language, and heritage to future generations.
Invest in Youth Leadership: Empower and mentor the youth to innovate and lead.
Build Our Infrastructure: Develop modern amenities that symbolize dignity and respect.
Turn Culture into Economy: Leverage cultural assets to employ youth, attract the world, and fuel pride.
Unity and Development: Forge unity and prioritise principle over patronage.
Senator Owie called on the Benin people to make a covenant to commit to one act of service yearly, put aside petty rivalries, and rise to innovation.
