TRIBUTE TO CHIEF SAM OSAMEDE ; CHIEF AJAS (1938–2025)
We celebrate Chief Sam Osamede …teacher, television icon and cultural legend whose influence stretched from the classroom to our screens.
For many who grew up in the old Bendel State ( Edo & Delta) , Sundays were never complete without Hotel de Jordan. Once Chief Ajas appeared, laughter was guaranteed.
Through his unforgettable portrayal of the witty, wealthy and hilariously self-important “money man of Jordan City,” Chief Osamede made humour a vehicle for wisdom and created a character that became part of our collective memory.
Who can forget:
“Tachio!”
“Oyao!”
“What’s matter?”
And, after another round of glorious self-praise:
“Oyes! Poor man must to suffer!” 😂
But before the cameras, there was the chalkboard.
Chief Osamede was an accomplished educator — teacher, principal and Chief Inspector of Education. He taught English Literature and helped shape generations of students, including Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, who remembered him as a strict disciplinarian who later became a lifelong friend.
He lived two remarkable lives in one lifetime. Many entertain; few educate. Many educate; few become cultural icons. Chief Osamede did all three.
Born in Afuze-Emai in 1938, he passed on October 21, 2025.
Adieu, Chief Honourable Ajas — the only money man in the whole of Jordan City!
The hotel may have closed, but your room remains forever booked in our history.
Rest in peace, Chief. 🕊️
