Reports that United States (US) Vice President Kamala Harris has raised at least $81 million in the first 24 hours of her campaign. The Harris campaign disclosed the number in a statement on Monday, saying it was the “largest 24-hour raise in presidential history”.
Recall that Harris was thrust into the 2024 US presidential race on Sunday evening after President Joe Biden decided to quit.
Biden quickly endorsed his vice president and former running mate for the Democratic Party’s nomination.
“Team Harris raised $81 million in its first 24 hours, adding to the existing near quarter-of-a-billion dollar war chest already amassed this election cycle,” the Harris campaign said.
Since Biden announced his exit and endorsement of the US vice president, she has raked in key endorsements from various party leaders as she quickly consolidated support.
While announcing her intention to win the election, Harris said she was ready to earn and win her party’s nomination and beat former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.
On Monday, the new presidential candidate visited the Biden-Harris campaign headquarters, which has transitioned to the Harris campaign headquarters.
Biden phoned in to the campaign to praise his vice president and ask that she is supported by campaign staffers.
“I want to say to the team, embrace her. She’s the best,” the US president said.
