The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) may have to move quickly to convince the two British-born sons of former Super Eagles defender Michael Emenalo to pledge their football and basketball allegiances to Nigeria before the United Kingdom (UK) and United States of America (USA) snap up the duo soonest.
This is even as Landon, the second son of Emenalo, who featured for Nigeria in her first-ever FIFA World Cup finals in USA in 1994, has recently signed his second professional football contract, which commits him to Chelsea Football Club of London until 2031 just as his older brother Seb, 19, is playing as a freshman guard for Loyola Maryland Greyhounds, a Division I College in the NCAA Basketball system in USA.
The two eldest sons of senior Emenalo, former Chelsea Technical Director FC and ex-Nigeria international footballer, are on twin sporting tracks that could, in the best-case scenario, lead them to become the first siblings ever to play in the Premier League and the NBA at the same time.
Prompt News reports that it was Seb who joined Chelsea’s academy first as a goalkeeper, the position their mother Erin had played for the University of Portland and then for the Washington Freedom in the United States’ first women’s professional sports league but it is Landon, 18, who entered Cobham as an under-8, who took after his father as a versatile player who could operate in the back line or in midfield.
The youngster was fast-tracked into Chelsea’s first-team training by ex-coach Mauricio Pochettino shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2024, and made the substitutes bench on several occasions under Enzo Maresca, most notably Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in October 2025.
It was no surprise to see Landon involved in Chelsea’s current gaffer, Liam Rosenior’s first training session as head coach in January 2026 even as his performances have attracted public praises,
including the recent one from Chelsea legend John Terry, which he said caught by surprise.
He said that these kinds of words mean more to him, especially from a club legend, and particularly one who still pays such close attention to the Chelsea
academy talent coming through Cobham.
Landon also said Terry’s public praise chimes with his own belief that he is ready for first-team football, but he is prepared to be patient in order to earn that opportunity at Chelsea.
However, along the way, Landon will have a firm decision to make about his international future; he has represented England and USA youth level and is also eligible for Nigeria. The reason NFF chieftains must move quickly to convince the youngster through his Nigerian father and former Enugu Rangers International player.
In another development, Emenalo’s first son Seb, who has played basketball for Great Britain at under-18 level, is similarly grounded in the sport and can be a big addition to Nigeria’s men basketball team D’Tigers.
As a freshman role player at Loyola University Maryland, the 2026 NBA draft is not a realistic option for Seb. He knows his development is likely to be a more gradual process of earning the trust of his coaching staff and team-mates, with the aim of developing his on-ball scoring and playmaking.
There are few sporting environments in the world more competitive for a young athlete than Chelsea’s academy or NCAA Division I basketball.
Just by making it to this stage of their respective journeys, Landon and Seb have already distinguished themselves as exceptional young talents, but their ambitions are far from satisfied. If they achieve them, the Emenalo family’s proud sporting pedigree will scale historic new heights.
Recall their parents (Michael and Erin) were professional sports personalities themselves with Michael playing as a left-back for the Super Eagles and famously featured in the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 1995 FIFA Confederations Cup. He earned 14 caps for the national team between 1985 and 1995, playing against Argentina, Greece, and Italy during the 1994 tournament.
He began with Enugu Rangers in Nigeria before playing for Boston University, Molenbeek (Belgium), Eintracht Trier (Germany), Notts County (England), and Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel).
Upon his retirement from active football, he moved into management of the sport as he later served as the Technical Director for Chelsea FC from 2011 to 2017 during its golden years and later at AS Monaco in France.
