Less than 24hrs after the APC national chairman Adams Oshiomhole presented the Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila as the party’s annoited candidate for the Speaker’s position for the 9th House of Representatives to president Muhammadu Buharu, another aspirant Rep John Dyegh (APC Benue) has declared his intention to contest the same position.
In his declaration this morning in Abuja, Dyegh a third timer federal legislator said in as much as he remains a loyal party man and believes in party supremacy, the North-Central caucus in the House is convinced that the zone is not being treated well in the scheme of things.
He appealed to the party to have a rethink and rezone the 9th House Speakership to the North-Central for Justice and Fairplay to prevail.
Rep Dyegh, a PhD holder in Economic History believes that party supremacy notwithstanding, important decisions as who gets what in the leadership positions in the legislature should not be rammed down the throats of lawmakers.
He based his argument on section 14 (3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended which provides for the reflection of federal character and command of national loyalty in the composition of the government of the federation or any of its agencies.
Noting that the North Central has neither produced the Speaker or Deputy Speaker since the commencement of the present political dispensation, the Speakership aspirant was of the opinion the only way to be fair to the zone was to give it the position based on its good showings at the last general elections where it delivered the third largest bloc vote for party out of the six geo political zones.
He then went on to unfold a 7-Point legislative agenda to be executed if given the position, prominent among which are amending the constitution to extend the four-year tenure of the legislature to six years at the three tiers of government and providing enhanced capacity of legislators and legislative support services through training
