In a significant government restructuring, President Bola Tinubu has dissolved the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development. This was revealed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, via a post on his X handle following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday.

The announcement included plans for a new Ministry of Regional Development, which will oversee regional commissions such as the Niger Delta Development Commission, as well as similar bodies in other regions like the North West, South West, and North East.

“The aim is to consolidate efforts in regional development under one ministry, ensuring a more unified and efficient approach to addressing regional disparities,” the statement noted.

Additionally, the National Sports Commission will now take over all responsibilities previously handled by the Ministry of Sports Development, making it the main body for sports management in Nigeria.

In another move, the FEC approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, a decision aimed at boosting collaboration between these sectors.

“These changes are part of the administration’s efforts to streamline government functions, ensuring a more focused approach to regional development and economic growth,” a government official added.
