Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara along with Senate President, Bukola Saraki Wednesday, met with President Muhammadu Buhari to fathom ways out of the incessant killings in the country with the latest been the Plateau massacre.
In a statement signed by the Speaker and made available to Penpushers in Abuja, Dogara said they requested for the meeting ‘in order to hear from the president the steps and measures the executive is taking to end the orgy of killings and violence not only on the Plateau but in other parts of the country’.
According to him; “We also used the opportunity to advise the President on other measures and actions that will help bring lasting peace in our country in accordance with the resolutions passed at the joint emergency closed-door session of the National Assembly held some weeks ago.
They called on all relevant government agencies to quickly provide emergency relief services to people in the affected areas.
In another development, The House has set up panel to investigate excessive charges by DISCOs.
This is just as Speaker Dogara has called for lasting solution to power problems in the country.
The panel is to look into allegations of excessive electricity charges being levied on consumers by distribution companies.
“The House is aware of the financial hardship being experienced by most of our people, due to the high electricity charges by DISCOs. This has further compounded the difficulty brought about by the economic downturn in the country. We are, therefore, determined to get all the facts on the matter, with a view to addressing it”, Dogara said.
He revealed that the committee was setup following allegations that after the unbundling of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), the DISCOs hurriedly installed new sets of prepaid meters which gobble the units purchased much faster than the older prepaid meters.
He charged the committee to “unravel the veracity of the allegation of the presence of wrongly configured prepaid meters that are over-billing the already impoverished masses of this country”
